Don Bosco Prep struggled against some of the nation's top teams when it went out to Las Vegas for a showcase last week. But even in the losses, head coach Mike Rooney was very impressed with the way that senior right-hander John Modugno threw the ball.

The Indiana recruit brought that same intensity back to New Jersey with him and threw six shutout innings as Don Bosco Prep, No. 10 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated No. 9 Pascack Hills, 3-0, at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey on Tuesday.

"In Vegas, we were struggling to get outs on ground balls. Here on our home turf, we were able to field the ball well to get the outs that we needed," Modugno said. "I'm very confident in myself. We really got the job done today."

Modugno used his fastball to set the pace and relied on his secondary pitches to put batters away as he struck out six in six shutout innings to pick up the victory.

He needed to be resilient at times as Pascack Hills had runners in scoring position in the first five innings, but every time Modugno got out the jam.

"In Las Vegas, John had to fight for every strike. Forget about hits. He had to fight for every strike," Rooney said. "He took a loss out there, but coming back home, we knew that if he stayed on it, we'd basically get what we saw from him today."

Don Bosco Prep scrapped three runs across against reigning NJ.com Player of the Year Ryan Ramsey. It scored two in the third inning with CJ Wonsowicz scoring on a fielder's choice from Daniel Helfgott and John Cohen coming across on a single from Charlie Granatell.

It added a third run in the bottom of the fifth when Jake Brazzano singled and scoring on a sac fly from Helfgott.

Ramsey finished allowing the three runs - two earned - on four hits and two walks. He struck out two.

The victory served as a bit of redemption for Don Bosco Prep after it fell to Pascack Hills, 3-1, in last year's Bergen County Tournament final. It was the first meeting between the two since.

"This was really important for the team morale," Modugno said. "Last year we lost to them in the county final that really hurt the 2018 team a lot. I feel like the 2019 team has a lot in store."
